About us

Dirty Knickers started off as a joke.

1999
A small group of us were returning from selling our T-Shirts in Madrid and were brain storming new T-Shirt ideas. As we drove over the hot and expansive plains, the infamous Spanish Bull sign loomed up on a hill top. Someone reasoned that the Bull would make a great T-Shirt for the young Spaniards we'd just been selling too…if we doctored the outline just a bit :-)

We all then noticed a Spanish road sign that kept cropping up, that we had not seen in the UK. The conversation went something like this…

"It means that you can come off at a motorway junction and get back on the motorway to go the other way…" one of us who spoke Spanish explained, "…the words Cambio de Sentido mean Change of Direction…or change of feeling."
"Really?" came a reply, "It looks like someone who is scratching their back all confused."
"That would make a good T-shirt…'Change of Direction' eh?"
"Change of feeling?" questioned another, "we should put that sign on my girlfriends Knickers!"
We all creased up laughing.
A truck over took us and one of the lads noticing the rear sign, "…and I want 'Long Vehicle' on my pants!"

By the time we had reached the ferry a few hours later, we had 170 ideas written down, and in homage to the infamous story of vending machines on the streets of Tokyo, 'Dirty Knickers' as a concept was born (see the Road Designs collection)

2000
We told a lot of friends about the idea, who kept telling us we had to launch the product. "When we gonna get to see your Dirty Knickers?" they kept asking.

2001
We researched the fabrication of the pants and printing techniques. We visited underwear producing factories from Indonesia to India.

2002
We designed in house our collection and conceived the framework for the web site.

2003
We approached the banks with our idea of selling Dirty Knickers on the internet. After a few serious discussions on dk and where you could expect to find Dirty Knickers in the future, the go-ahead was given.

June 2003 We launched at Glastonbury Festival.

Well…Dirty Knickers took off, and the rest is history…
